Mainstreaming discrimination advice in rural CAB across the UK

Lead Partner: The Citizens Advice Bureaux (CAB)

Description

The Citizens Advice service is the largest independent network of free advice centres in Europe, providing advice from over 3,500 outlets in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, at venues including GPs’ surgeries, hospitals, community centres, county courts, magistrates courts, and mobile services.

The service has two equal aims:

  • to ensure that individuals do not suffer through lack of knowledge of their rights and responsibilities or of the services available to them, or through an inability to express their needs effectively;
  • and equally, to exercise a responsible influence on the development of social policies and services, both locally and nationally.
The Citizens Advice service believes that in order to build inclusive communities there needs to be better understanding of the cultural differences and barriers that prevent the full participation of different communities. We also believe that mainstream services should address the needs of all minority groups, working in partnership with those groups where possible. To achieve this in rural areas, this project will explore how to mainstream discrimination advice within rural Citizens Advice Bureaux in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, and how to overcome the difficulties inherent in reaching isolated communities in isolated places.
