Carnegie UK Trust has long championed the needs of rural communities across the UK and Ireland. The provision of affordable housing has proved to be the most pressing issue in rural England. Assisted by funds from the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG), Carnegie UK Trust, in partnership with Community Finance Solutions, are issuing invitations to tender for organisations to act as the Community Land Trust National Facilitation Body.

Community Finance Solutions have developed a short Community Land Trust training course in conjunction with Carnegie UK Trust aimed at providing communities and their key partners with the tools to set up and run a successful Community Land Trust housing project.

‘We have recognised that the most important elements driving regeneration are people-based: ideas, attitudes, culture and narratives. This is a hopeful message in some ways because investing in people is cheaper than huge infrastructure projects – but it is much harder to do and to justify. Our research points to the need to redress the balance of regeneration programmes, away from expensive capital projects to investment in locally inspired action.’

Rural Convention 2009- Reporting Back

Over 100 delegates enrolled in the fifth Carnegie Rural Convention which was held in Kendal, Cumbria on November 23rd and November 24th, 2009. In the end 96 individuals actually attended: a remarkable turnout in view of the fact that the event coincided with the major flooding in Cumbria.

Carnegie's Annual Rural Convention is an extraordinary networking event for rural activists, professionals and policy-makers. This programme brings together experts, pioneers and fieryspirits from across the UK and Ireland (and beyond.)

This year’s convention focuses on mixing the insights from the Carnegie Rural Programme (the recently completed Rural Action Research Programme and Fieryspirits Community of Practice) with the on the ground delivery of the European funded LEADER programme. We want to open up some of the big issues – to see how local action might address themes such as climate change, food and farming, community action planning, building local resilience and asset acquisition and development.

The rural programme of the Carnegie UK Trust organised a seminar on “Protected Landscapes- Do National Parks Deliver for the People?” at the Festival of Politics held in the Scottish Parliament on August 22nd, 2009. Vigorously chaired by Lesley Riddoch, the sixty strong seminar gave a good airing to the debate on whether national parks in Scotland have delivered for the people.
