Cornish Win at the ‘Celtic Oscars’

Carnegie partner and Cornish Film-maker, Will Coleman was delighted to be awarded the winner's 'torque' in the 'Entertainment' section with his co-partner, Robin Kewell, at the Celtic Media Festival in Galway, Ireland in April. The short film 'Tom and the Giant' is a tongue-in-cheek modern retelling of the ancient Cornish fairytale.

“It was great fun,” said Will Coleman, “I dressed up as a road worker and Robin filmed me telling stories to tourists trapped in a rainy traffic jam on the A30!”

The judging panel were obviously entertained by the no-budget mini-epic as it saw off well-funded competition from BBC Scotland, S4C Wales and other Celtic countries. Immediately after the award ceremony Will was approached.

The Cornish contingent in Galway included several bursary-winners from Cornwall Media Focus including Jane Darke, 'The Art of Catching Lobsters', Mark Jenkin 'The Midnight Drives ' and Brett Harvey 'An Jawl yn Agas Gegin'. The event proved very fruitful as Cornish film-makers met up with their Breton, Irish and Welsh counterparts,

'We could very well be seeing Cornish films broadcast on Irish and Breton TV' said Will 'they were amazed at the quality of our work given that we have no TV channel of our own here to commission or broadcast work'.

These shorts will be screened with others at “vaRnishing Cornwall” - a project to make a community film in Fowey in Cornwall this summer.
