For over thirty years, Theatr Felinfach has been a centre of independent, community-led, creative activity in Ceredigion, taking place primarily but not exclusively through the medium of Welsh.
The work of the centre happens mainly in Ceredigion, but also reaches North Pembrokeshire and South Gwynedd. Although there has always been an emphasis on work with young people, there are many activities taking place here that involve the entire community; in our long-running radio drama, for example, the age of performers varies from eight to eighty-eight. The main ethos of the centre is to use drama, dance and the creative media in general as tools for informal community education. All of the creative theatre work is developed and devised by the participants, with professional leadership – the idea of developing skills over an extended period of time is an essential one. Another all-important aspect is that of community learning and development – the themes and issues being explored through the projects are relevant and real to the groups and to the changing communities and culture of rural west Wales.
