Lead Partner: Tai O Village
Description
Tai O is a traditional fishing village situated on Lantau Island at the mout of the Pearl River Delta. It is rich in cultural and natural resources with rare birds and mammals still found in the nearby areas. The houses of Tai O residents are built on stilts over the river and its narrow lanes are filled with shops selling dried fish and other produce. The citizens here are mainly the Tanka people who are descendants of Hong Kong’s first settlers. One of the oldest temples in the region still operates in the village.
The village works to develop social enterprises such as community based tourism activity to create income and help to retain young people in the community. To this end they have developed a range of initiatives such as home-visit programs, village tours, craft, boat tours etc which use the skill, resource and initiative of local people to build new initiatives and enterprises for the benefit of the whole community.
The community work office of the YWCA plays an important role in supporting local initiatives.
