Success Stories from Egyptian Communities: Egypt

Lead Partner: Near East Foundation

Description

Near EastThe manual presents case studies of development initiatives driven by communities and supported by local asset bases, to assist those striving towards sustainable community development in Egypt to maximize the value added to locally available assets and resources.

Case studies included in this manual are drawn from contexts as varied as Bedouin nomadic groups to urban and rural neighborhoods, introducing a wide range of development experiences. The common feature among these communities is their ability to recognize their asset bases and to benefit from them to achieve specific goals.

By showing and discussing these mature experiences, we are aiming to answer several questions such as: Can development achievements be traced to the community’s capacity to identify and organize the effective use of assets? To what extent does the community consciously recognize the development of its asset base? To what extent do development practitioners view the positive side of the local community; Its assets and resources, compared to the negative side; its problems and defects?

Through presenting this manual, Centre for Development Studies aims to help development practitioners in civil societies, government agencies and the private sector in bridging the gap between development needs and locally available resources and capacities which are not utilized to their full potential.

The Near East Foundation (NEF) established the Centre for Development Services in Cairo in 1990 to support community development initiatives.
