Navdanya: Asia

Lead Partner: Navdanya

Description

NavdanyaFounded by world-renowned scientist and environmentalist Dr.Vandana Shiva, Navdanya was born from the search for nonviolent farming approaches, which protect biodiversity, the Earth and our small farmers.

Navdanya means nine crops that represent India’s collective source of food security. The main aim of the Navdanya biodiversity conservation programme is to support local farmers, rescue and conserve crops and plants that are being pushed to extinction and make them available through direct marketing.

Navdanya is actively involved in the rejuvenation of indigenous knowledge and culture. It has its own 20 acre seed bank and organic farm in Uttranchal, north India.

Biodiverse organic farming produces more food and nutrition and brings higher incomes to farmers than monocultures and chemical farming thus improving the well-being of small and marginalised rural producers. While avoiding environmental harm, biodiverse organic farming is also an insurance in times of climate change.

Biodiverse small organic farms increase productivity, improve rural
incomes and strengthen ecological security.

Over coming years Navdanya will expand its network of outlets and cafes to create another food culture, which respects diversity, local production and food quality. The future of food depends on keeping
women’s food knowledge and expertise alive so Navdanya focuses
especially on work with women and children. Our mission is to keep
food security in women’s hands through a network of women’s producer groups (Mahila Anna Swaraj). Women are the custodians
of biodiversity, the providers of food security, the preservers and
processors of food, and the conservers of the cultural diversity of food
traditions.
